Living in a foreign country can be described as one of the most terrifying yet thrilling adventures ever. Your daily life and routine will change – and it goes beyond just your address and new cuisines you get to try. Living abroad broadens your perspective of the world and life, and it may change the way you view things forever.
If you’re living abroad for the first time, here are 4 things that may change forever during your stay.
1. You see home in a new light
You may have moved abroad for a change in environment and to jump on a new opportunity that takes you far away from home. But as a foreigner in your new country, explaining that you’re not a native resident is often met with interest and fascination from the locals. This outside perspective can give you a newfound appreciation for the streets back home and everything you were familiar with. After all, absence makes the heart grow fonder. The things you once used to complain about at home may very well be something close to your heart now that you’re away.
2. You start assimilating into local culture
While you may be new to the country, you’ll eventually become one of the locals over time. You’ll probably start by learning the native language, or discover the local slangs and lingo, but assimilating goes way beyond maintaining a proper conversation. Eventually, you’ll know where to shop for the best deals, the barista at your favourite café will know your exact order, and you’ll passionately discuss local politics. Even though it’s not the same as growing up in the area, you’ll assimilate into the culture and catch yourself ‘doing as the locals do’.
3. Goodbyes may get easier
Although saying goodbye is never really associated with being pleasant, farewells do get a little easier with time. It may be due to the fact that you now have two homes, so you’ll always have a familiar bed to retreat to – no matter where you’re travelling to. It could also be that you’ve found a way to cope and accept the inevitable, and you know that there will always be a hello after a goodbye.
4. Care packages start to mean a lot
Even though you’re likely able to order anything you want online, receiving a care package full of treats from home trumps any purchase you can make. Especially if it’s a gift from a friend or family member, it’s undoubtedly heartwarming to receive a package full of familiarity while knowing that your loved one is thinking of you.
Your favourite snacks and delicacies will bring plenty of comfort as you miss the taste of it when you’re away from home. Here’s a tip: if you fear going through them too fast, ration them with the expiration dates to stretch out their shelf life for as long as possible!
