A 20-foot container has an interior dimension of 19’3”L X 7’8”W X 7’9”H (L 5.86m X W 2.33m X H 3.38m). It has 146 square feet (13.86sqm) of floor space and 1,172 cubic feet (33.19cbm) of volume. As a general rule, if packed well, all of your belongings in a 1 – 2 bedroom apartment (of 1,000ft) will fit easily into a 20-foot container.

A 40-foot container has an interior dimension of 37’5”L X 7’8”W X 7’9”H (L 12.01m X W 2.33m X H 2.38m). It has 285 square feet (26.48sqm) of floor space and 2,120 cubic feet (60.03cbm) of volume. As a general rule, if packed well, all of your belongings in a 3 – 4 bedroom apartment (of 2,000ft) will fit easily into a 40-foot container.

LCL shipment is usually quoted when you do not have enough volume to fill a reasonable amount of space in a 20-foot container. LCL shipment is a more cost effective method of shipping for smaller consignments, as it enables you to combine with other shipping consignments headed for the same destination. If you have some flexibility in your schedule, you may consider this option – this is almost as speedy as having an exclusive containter, and is viable for smaller shipment volumes.

FCL shipment is quoted when you have enough volume to fill a full 20-foot or 40-foot container, and grants you exclusive right to use a dedicated ocean cargo container for your own consignment. It is usually a faster and more cost effective option if you have sufficient volume to fill more than half the container, as it eliminates additional handling and transportation fees.

Groupage shipping is a cost effective way to ship smaller shipments (below half a 20-foot Container). This type of shipping involves grouping your goods together with others that are travelling to the same destination, so that they can make up full containers. Shipments are packed and held in the warehouses until a container that is bound for your destination is filled. This is also known as consolidation shipping.
